how many perfect squares can be displayed on a 12 digit calculator?

need help….am reviewing for an upcoming entrance exam and cant seem to figure out the solutions to these review questions:
1. how many perfect squares can be displayed on a 12 digit calculator?
-the solution says to take the square root of 1,000,000,000,000 and subtract the answer by 1 to obtain 999,999…but why??
2.how many numbers between 1/4 and 1/2 can be displayed on an 8-digit calculator?
-i dont really get why the answer is 24,999,999
3. this question confuses me most…
a spoonful of cream is taken from a cup of cream and put into a cup of coffee and stirred. then a spoonful of this mixture is taken and put into the cup of cream. which of the ff. results are true?
a. the amount of coffee in the cup of cream is equal to the amount of cream in the coffee cup.
b. there is no way to compare the amount of cream and coffee in the cup
…my initial answer here was b, but i cant figure out why the right answer is A

These questions test how you look at the problem:
1. the biggest digit that can be displayed is 999,999,999,999. that’s one less than 10^12 which makes it the smallest number that cannot be displayed. The square root of 10^12 = 10^6. But since (10^6)^2 is too big, the largest number that can be displayed is 10^6 – 1 or 999,999.

2. Consider: Between means do not include .5 or .25. How many integers are there between 48 and 50? the answer is 1 — 49. you get that answer by subtracting 1 from the difference between the endpoints. (50 – 48 – 1).

8-digit calculator can display 50,000,000 and it can display 25,000,000. (It can also display a leading decimal point.) The difference (forget the decimal) is 25,000,000. 25000000 – = 24,999,999

3. Since they didn’t tell you the size of the spoon, you can make is anything you want. (the answer is not intuitive so you have to experiment) Make the spoon be 1/4 cup.

Put 1/4 cup of cream into 1 cup of coffee and you have 5/4 cup of mix. it’s 20%cream and 80% coffee. Now take 1/4 cup of the mix out. the mix is constant, so there’s .8 cup of coffee and .2 cup of cream left. what you took out is .8(1/4) cup of coffee – or .2 cup of coffee and .05 cup of cream (the rest of 1/4 cup). But you’re putting .2 cup of coffee into the cream.

So the amount of cream in the coffee is 0.2 cup
the amount of coffee in the cream is 0.2 cup.

The same logic works with any size spoon!
