Are all incandescent light bulbs dimmable?

I recently received a lamp for Christmas. The lamp has only a single way bulb socket i.e. not a 3 way bulb socket which has two hot leads. However, the lamp has three settings off, half on, and full on (as opposed to a 3 way lamp which has 4 settings). I use mostly compact florescent light bulbs in my house, but I find that the light produced is nicer when there is at least one incandescent light bulb on in the room.

My question is this: I know that it works to have a normal incandescent light bulb on the half on position, and it does produce roughly half of the light, however I am wondering if the light bulb will last less long in this position, and if the light produced will have a different spectrum distribution as it would when in the fully on position.

To clarify, this question is not about compact florescent light bulbs (CFL’s).

It should last longer if it’s a standard incandescent light bulb.

Other types of incandescent light bulbs, such as quartz halogen lamps will actually burn out more quickly when dimmed because it interrupts something called the tungsten halogen cycle. These must burn at a certain temperature otherwise they will burn out quickly.

So the answer to “are ALL incandescent light bulbs dimmable” is no.

Trust me on this one. I found out the hard way. I installed 150 of them, all on dimmers, in an office and had to replace them all within a month.

This microprocessor allows the E-ballast to run either halide or sodium lamps, to switch between 50 and 60 hertz, to make adjustments for the type of bulb it is running, and even to compensate for degraded lamps by increasing its output. Electronic ballasts have a constant output and cannot make adjustments or changes. They will light a MH lamp; but quickly cause it to degrade, thus shortening the lamp`s lifespan. Lumatek ballasts are programmed to allow for a `soft start` and do not require an initial power surge to start the ballast. This allows end users to start multiple ballasts simultaneously without blowing a breaker. The ballast will also detect a short in the wiring or a defective lamp. It simply shuts itself off, letting the user know that something is wrong. This should be kept in mind if you have a customer whose ballast keeps shutting down.
